Haiti: history of oppression and resistance

FILM SHOWING

Wednesday 3 March, 5pm

R610, Boyd Orr building,

University Avenue
Glasgow University

Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! student society presents the documentary film ‘Aristide and the Endless Revolution’ about the US-backed 2004 coup to remove democratically elected president Jean Bertrand Aristide from Haiti . Aristide’s previous presidency was similarly ended in 1991.

Since the devastating earthquake which struck Haiti on 12 January 2010, the US has initiated its fourth invasion of the island, swamping it with combat troops, taking over the airports, ports and roads. Elections have been postponed and Aristide’s party, Lavalas, has been banned from standing.

In contrast, Cuba has around 1,000 medical personnel in Haiti treating tens of thousands of Haitians. Cuban medics have worked in Haiti for ten years and had sent up two field hospitals within 24 hours of the earthquake.

The film will be followed by a discussion of the issues raised, including what we can do here in Britain to oppose imperialist interventions in Haiti and support Haitian peoples’ right to self-determination.

Capital Reading Group

Understanding Marxism

If serious understanding and opposition to imperialism and racism is to be built then a thorough understanding of capitalism is required. To this end this group will study the seminal work of the revolutionary Karl Marx, in order to understand capitalism, not in some academic abstract way but as a means through which action can be taken. It is open to all interested in reading Capital in a group and no prior reading is necessary. Come along and join the discussion
